From April 22 to 30, 2022, the student theater group "Molly Hatchet" will present the play "The Sandman" based on E.T.A. Hoffmann at 8 p.m. each night on stage in the Great Hall of Mensa I of the Student Union Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel.

"The Sandman is an evil man who comes to children when they don't want to go to bed and throws hands full of sand into their eyes so that they pop out bloody to the head."

As a child, Nathanael witnessed the alchemical experiments of his father and the advocate Coppelius. A trauma that suddenly catches up with him again when he meets the weather glass merchant Coppola. He sees in him the cruel Coppelius, the monster, the Sandman. Nathaniel plunges into a dark world of dramatic nightmares, frenzied rage and bizarre madness. But then the inwardly torn student notices the beautiful Olimpia peering at him through the window in the house across the street. He falls under her spell, not noticing how the gears are turning inside her ...

E.T.A. Hoffmann's tale from 1816 is more topical today than ever: it explores the question of where the boundary between man and machine lies. How much emotion can an artificial life form show and what is perhaps only a projection of our own needs? Audiences can expect a dark, twisted piece of black romance, staged in steampunk style.
