The BAföG will be improved for the winter semester 2022/23

The Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW), the association of the 57 student and student unions that implement the student BAföG, shows in a current overview the BAföG improvements that will take effect this winter semester 2022/2023.

  • Parental allowances will be increased by more than 20 percent; i.e. parental income may be considerably higher. The result: more students can potentially benefit from state support.
  • Mini-job limit is raised from 450 to 520 euros; students working mini-jobs can earn 70 euros more per month without changing the amount of BAföG support. Since the minimum wage has been raised, this does not necessarily mean that more time has to be invested in jobbing.
  • The need rates will increase by 5.75 per cent; in the case of living away from home, by 11 per cent, which means 934 € per month for 25- to 29-year-olds.
  • Age limits are raised to 45 years
  • Wealth allowances will be increased to €15,000 before the age of 30 and €45,000 after the age of 30, depending on age.

Matthias Anbuhl, Secretary General of the German Student Union (Deutsches Studentenwerk), explains: "The chances of receiving BAföG are increasing, a BAföG application is worthwhile. At the same time, old clichés must be cleared up. Today, the BAföG application can be submitted digitally. You only have to ask questions and not fill out extensive forms. BAföG is also not a loan, but to a large extent a grant. Those who receive the BAföG maximum grant during ten semesters of study receive more than 50,000 euros from the state, but have to pay back a maximum of 10,010 euros - for an academic education. That's why it's important to apply so that no funding is lost."

Students can submit their BAföG application at www.bafoeg-digital.de.
