Support under the BAföG is only provided if the trainee does not otherwise have the funds required for his or her living expenses and education (so-called subsidiarity principle). These funds may be available elsewhere not only from the trainee's income and assets, but above all from maintenance payments from persons who are obliged to support the trainee. In accordance with the subordination of the state social benefit BAföG, training support can only be granted in the case of parent-dependent support if the parents are not or not fully able to provide maintenance.
The calculation comes from the BAföG website of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.
