History
1921/22
At the end of the First World War, the economic situation of students and teachers was dramatically bad. So students and professors joined together to form independent self-help groups and emergency communities. From this, the official "Studentenhilfe" (student aid) developed at the Kiel location in 1921/22.
1930-1960
From 1933, the student union in Kiel was also subject to the influence of the National Socialists. In 1938, a "Reichsstudentenwerk" (Reich Student Union) was formed, in which all regional student unions were brought into line. This meant that the institutions temporarily lost their autonomy and economic as well as political independence. After the Second World War, Kiel was badly damaged and there was great need among the students. The Studentenwerke resumed their work in the legal form of a "registered association" or a "foundation under public law". Dormitories and refectories were built, a medical care center and a kindergarten were established, and general student support was offered. More and more students took advantage of the services offered by the Studentenwerk.
1960s
In 1961, the student union in Kiel became a model for the entire republic. The so-called "Kiel Student House Plan" aimed to build student houses at universities that would serve as the center of student community life. Not only were all support facilities to be united under one roof there, but specialized rooms for cultural activities were also to be provided. Thus, in the mid-1960s, the Kiel Student House and the Sechseckbau, the heart of the "Communication & Culture" department, were created. However, the Kiel model was then only realized in a comprehensive form in a few cities.
1970s
In 1971, the Student Union Act is passed. This extends the responsibility of the Studentenwerk to the whole of Schleswig-Holstein.
Today
The Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein is a modern service provider with a wide range of services. To serve the more than 60,000 students from ten universities at six university locations in Schleswig-Holstein, the Studentenwerk SH employs around 560 people who work in the individual departments.
Corporate divisions
In its canteens, cafeterias and café lounges at six university campuses across Schleswig-Holstein, the university catering team provides students with affordable and healthy meals every day. From snacks such as baguettes, yoghurts and salads, to speciality coffees made from Fairtrade beans and freshly baked waffles, right through to a wide variety of delicious hot dishes – the Studentenwerk SH bases its menu on the latest culinary trends and the preferences of its students. Values such as quality and sustainability, combined with good value for money, are a top priority here.
